Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris)

3: Treatment & Tips

Jock itch

What are the treatments?

Your doctor will give you an anti-fungal cream, solution, spray, or powder that is typically applied for 2-4 weeks. Some creams are available over the counter, but you should ask your doctor for any questions you may have about your rash to ensure other conditions can be ruled out. Typical brand names for over the counter medicines include: Micatin, Tinactin, Monistat, Lotrimin. Or Terbinafine cream (Lamisil). Please wash the area with soap and water before applying any cream. If the infection is resistant to creams or spreads to the lower thighs or buttocks, oral therapy might be given. Itraconazole and terbinafine are examples of an oral medicine or pill that may be given to you. Please take the medication recommended by your doctor.

What else should I remember to do if I have jock itch?

Keep the area dry, and try to prevent any excess moisture from becoming trapped under clothing or protective sports gear
Avoid over the counter steroids (cortisone)
Change your underwear every day

Most infections resolve completely after medication or sometimes on their own, but some people with weakened immune systems may develop a more serious infection that can spread below the skin.
